Building Scalability into their Order Ahead Feature

Level Up (now owned by GrubHub) helps restaurants shift to mobile with their customers by building and powering digital ordering experiences that bring together loyalty programs, restaurant rewards, menus, and mobile payments. LevelUp is currently used by over 14,000 merchant locations and 4 million users.

The Challenge

LevelUp needed a technology solution that could keep up with their growth. They knew running manual scripts to receive restaurant menu and merchant information from their providers wasn’t a scalable solution, so they set out to build a new back-end system to integrate with online ordering providers.  They needed to stand up a Ruby on Rails app to handle the automation and scheduling of these jobs but didn’t have the in-house bandwidth to do it while moving forward on other parts of their roadmap.

The Solution

LevelUp brought in The Gnar team to build  a Ruby on Rails application with backend integrations to automatically retrieve information from online ordering partner restaurants, such as Sweetgreen, Pret a Manger, and Smoothie King.

The integrations also involved importing restaurant menu data and enabling placement of food orders via LevelUp’s Order Ahead feature.

The Results

With the new application in place and backend integrations set, collecting and updating restaurant menus and other information has never been easier. Not only making for a better user experience, but helping LevelUp’s business grow by improving new partner restaurant onboarding and retention - while freeing up internal engineers to focus on new feature development.
